The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia has released a briefing prepared as of 3:45 PM EST Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in regards to the potential winter weather event this coming Friday, January 8, 2021. Some uncertainty still remains regarding the track of low pressure that will move through North Carolina on Friday that could potentially bring a small accumulation of snow to the Piedmont late Friday afternoon into Friday night.

  • Rain is expected to mix with and changeover to all snow across the Piedmont late Friday as low pressure passes through North Carolina.

  • A small accumulation of heavy, wet snow is possible.

  Threats

  • Accumulating snow.

  Timing

  • Late Friday afternoon into Friday night.

  Location

  • The best chance for accumulating snow (~1") is south of Virginia Hwy 460 and west of Interstate 95.

  • A mix of rain and snow is possible even into Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina Friday night with little or no accumulation expected.

  Hazards and Impacts

  • Travel may become hazardous late Friday afternoon into Friday night due to a small accumulation of 

    heavy, wet snow.
