      March 4, 2020 - The County of Sussex Virginia is accepting applications for the position of Director of Environmental Inspections.

      Job Duties include:

      • managing and coordinating operation of the landfill, convenience centers, refuse collection, disposal program and recycling activities;
      • overseeing the closure and post closure care requirements and activities to monitor and maintain the closed landfills;
      • ensuring landfill operations are in compliance with state and federal requirements;
      • reviewing and/or preparing various reports and records such as daily operation and recycling information;
      • serving as liaison with any firm operating or otherwise involved with the County landfill;
      • assessing equipment needs and making recommendations on equipment purchases;

      • assisting the County Administrator in implementing initiatives and directives of the Board of Supervisors;

      • participating on staff management teams and committees as appointed by the County Administrator;
      • planning, developing and executing long range solid waste and recycling programs according to anticipated growth, future interest and needs;
      • preparing detailed monthly reports for the Board of Supervisors and County Administrator;
      • responding to citizens’ questions and complaints as needed; performing code enforcement for the County’s Solid Waste Ordinance; developing, maintaining and administering County Solid Waste Management Plan, Conditional Use Permit and Contract and Ground Lease Agreement;
      • must attend Board of Supervisors meetings;
      • other duties as assigned

      Education & Experience

      • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in civil engineering, environmental science, biology, chemistry or related field) supplemented by technical training in solid waste disposal, landfill management or related fields;
      • extensive experience in the management of solid waste operations which shall have included supervisory experience;
      • at least five (5) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience providing the knowledge, abilities and skills cited above.

      Special Requirements

      • Possession of a valid and appropriate driver’s licenses issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia;
      • must possess state registration as a “Certified Manager of Landfill Operations” or obtain Class I certification within 6 months.

Planner

Department: Planning and Zoning
Salary Range: $40,000+ DOQ

The Berkley Group seeks a qualified, self-motivated applicant to serve as a Planner for the company. The position will assist Sussex County, Virginia with its planning and zoning functions.

Primary functions include:

  • Regular, reliable attendance necessary;
  • Day-to-day current development operations including code enforcement, zoning permits, site plan and subdivision plat review, zoning review and enforcement, and planning applications;
  • Strong customer service in working with the general public, contractors, architects, developers, public officials, state and federal agencies, etc.;

Skills & Qualifications

Aptitude for or experience with current and long-range planning activities including zoning and code enforcement practices as applicable to the Commonwealth of Virginia; ability to read and interpret local, state, and federal regulations, surveys, site plans, plats, and plans of development; ability to gather and interpret technical and statistical information and prepare technical reports; ability to establish effective working relationships with local staff, regional partnership staff, state agencies, contractors, architects, land developers, associates and the general public; strong verbal and written communication skills. Technical skills, including proficiency in GIS and desktop publishing systems, desirable. Certified zoning official/administrator credentials will be required within the first year. AICP encouraged.

Education & Experience

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public policy, or a field related to urban planning, community development, or public administration or equivalent experience.

Full Time Cook (Closed)

Sussex County Jail is seeking qualified applicants to apply for a cook position. Qualifications include prior experience in the food service field. Current Serv-Safe certification as a Food Service Manager is preferred, and is a requirement within 3 months of the date of hire. The applicant must be at least 21 years of age and have NO criminal history convictions. Upon employment, the applicant will be required to submit to both random and regularly scheduled drug tests along with all other employees.

The employee must pass a physical examination, at this position requires lifting of boxes of food and canned goods. The employee must be able to follow a DOC-Approved menu, and will maintain inventory of food, reordering items as required. The employee will ensure that all Department of Health sanitation and safety requirements are met and maintained at all times. An inmate worker may assist the cook with food preparation and kitchen clean-up after meals.

This position is full-time with all the appropriate benefits, including enrollment in the Virginia Retirement System, paid holidays each year, as approved by the Governor and Sussex County Board of Supervisors, and sick leave. Salary for this postion will be based on past experience in Food Service, Sussex County residence will be given preference, but is not the only factor in hiring.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Candidates need skills in interpreting statutes and rules, applying criminal law to facts and determining the significance of testimony or other items of evidence. The analysis also consists of assessing the credibility of witnesses based on factors such as bias or inconsistency in statements. Possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills and abilities. Eligible candidates must possess 3- 5 years of trial litigation experience. Must possess professional ethics, persuasive and organizational skills and abilities.

Under general supervision, performs difficult skilled trades work in the enforcement of local and state laws and ordinances regulating the keeping, control and protection of animals within the County; implements and administers animal shelter activities and initiatives to ensure the initiatives are consistent with departmental directives, County policies, ordinances and regulations; receives, investigates and answers citizens’ complaints; implements rabies control operations; performs capture and seizure operations; impounds abandoned dogs and other animals; intakes owner surrender animals; performs warrant service operations; performs humane investigations; testifies in court for County code in code enforcement cases; implements euthanasia per state guidelines; on call after hours and weekends is required.

Special Requirements:

Victim/Witness Assistance Program Director (Closed)

Department: Sussex County Commonwealth Attorney's Office
Employment Status: Regular, Full Time, Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $52,297.00 - $67,675.00

The purpose of the position is to develop, coordinate and enhance resources for Victim/Witness Assistance Program for Sussex County Commonwealth's Attorney Office Jurisdiction. Ensure the rights of victims and witnesses within the criminal justice system; Ensure that these individuals receive information and necessary direct services because of their position as victims and witnesses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides direct services to diverse crime victim population, including involvement with the criminal justice system.
  • Serve as a liaison between victims and witnesses of crimes and the County Attorney's office;
  • Notify all victims and witnesses both verbally and in writing of court proceedings, explain the court process to them, and will prepare them to testify in court proceedings;
  • Compile restitution amounts, and victims impact statements for use by the County Attorney's office and the Court;
  • Attend court hearings and may have to testify in court;
  • Determine the special needs or other services necessary for victims and witnesses; and either provide or refer those services to them;
  • Provides information on Victim's Rights and Victim Compensation, while assessing the needs of victims and making the appropriate referrals and necessary follow-ups.
  • Meets with victims and assist them in the completion of the Victims Compensation Assistance Claim form for compensation of financial loss sustained due to defendant's acts. To also file the claims online in a specialized system and track the cases through the filing process and make contact with the victim(s) if additional information is needed.
  • Assists Victim Assistance specialists to obtain case status information, police information, or restitution information, as requested. If an award letter is provided through CICF make sure the appropriate information is placed in the criminal file so the defendant is held accountable for repayment. A copy of the award letter is also sent to Clerk of Court, Defendant's Courts and Probation for the collection of restitution.
  • Send letters to creditors on behalf of the victim, only if a claim has been filed as well as serve as a contact person for hospitals, providers or funeral directors.
  • Provides physical safety and emotional support to victim while officers attend to "scene of the crime assignments", including assistance with immediate needs when applicable, (i.e., shelter, clothing, telephone assistance, transportation.)
  • Assists victims with the timely return of property and items of evidence.
  • Keeps victims informed about the status of their case, including jail release and/or court tracking information, as well as, accompany victims to court as needed.
  • Recruit, coordinate, train and utilizes volunteers.
  • Keeps up-to-date on current laws, regulations and trends in victim assistance.
  • Compiles statistics and database to prepare monthly, quarterly and annual progress and financial reports and maintains client files.
  • Develops and updates resource directory for victims of crime.
  • Completes any and all other related duties as assigned by the Sussex County Commonwealth's Attorney.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system;
  • Must have knowledge of office technology: Microsoft Office Products-Word, Excel, Access, and etc.;
  • The ability to gather, organize and analyze information;
  • The ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Candidate must have the ability to speak and understand the English language (to speak and understand the Spanish language a plus).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, criminal justice or social work from an accredited college or university or two or more years dealing directly with the delivery of human services.
  • Must have driver's license and own transportation.
  • Must be willing to undergo a criminal background check.

Under the direction of the Director of Community Development, the Building Official performs complex supervisory and technical work managing the Building Inspections Office by administering and enforcing the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and the Commercial and Residential International Building Codes (IBC). Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree along with certification as a Building Official through the International Code Council and certification as a Building Official through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development is required. Extensive (at least five years) experience as a licensed professional engineer or architect, building, fire or trade inspector, contractor or housing inspector is required.

Certification as an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Reviewer or Combined Administrator is preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment.
