Commissioner of the Revenue

The Commissioner of the Revenue is a state constitutional officer as set forth in the constitution of Virginia and is the chief assessing office of the local government. This is an elected position. The Commissioner serves a four year term. Ellen G. Boone has served as Commissioner of the Revenue since January 1, 1995 and prior to that served as Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue for 15 years. The Commissioner of the Revenue’s office is regulated by the State Code of Virginia and the Sussex County Code.

The Commissioner of the Revenue’s office is responsible for assessing the following taxes:

  • Business Furniture & Fixtures
  • Merchants’ Capital
  • Real Estate
  • Mobile Homes
