Sussex General District and Juvenile and Domestic Courts Cancellation Notices

  January 3, 2022: Sussex County Combined Courts CLOSED Today, Monday January 3, 2022

  April 5, 2021: Sussex County Combined Courts are CLOSED until Tuesday, April 6th due to COVID-19 exposure and sanitation. 

  February 18, 2021: Court docket is cancelled. All cases will be continued to another date. 

  December 30, 2020: Sussex General District and Juvenile and Domestic Courts will be closed Thursday, December 31, 2020 and Friday, January 1, 2021 in observance of the New Year Holiday.

  October 2, 2020: Sussex County General District Court will be Closed on Friday, October 2nd for maintenance.

  August 3, 2020: Due to Expected Inclement Weather and the Statewide Declaration of Emergency the Sussex County Combined Courts will be CLOSED on Tuesday, August 4th.

  June 23, 2020: The Sussex County Combined Courts are closed through Friday, June 26th and will re-open on Monday, June 29th.

  June 22, 2020: The Sussex County Combined Courts are closed for Tuesday, June 23.  Sussex General District Court and the Sussex Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court dockets will be cancelled Tuesday, June 23rd and Wednesday, June 24^th.

  April 22nd, 2020: The Supreme Court of Virginia announced Third Order Extending Declaration of Judicial Emergency in Response to COVID-19 Emergency resulting in extension of the Courts Cancellation through May 17th, 2020.

  March 30th, 2020: The Supreme Court of Virginia ordered the Extension of Declaration of Judicial Emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak resulting in extension of the Courts Cancellation through April 26th, 2020.

All civil, traffic and criminal matters in the Court, except for emergency matters are cancelled.

Emergency matters include but are not limited to:

• Petitions for isolation
• Inmate arraignments
• Bail reviews
• Protective order cases
• Civil commitment hearings

Advisements and bond hearings will be held by video when possible. All cases will be rescheduled, and notices will be mailed.

The General District Court handles traffic violations, minor criminal cases and conducts preliminary hearings for more serious criminal cases called felonies.
