Assistant Chief of Fire & Rescue
The County of Sussex is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Chief of Fire & Rescue. This position will assist with the planning, organizing, and directing of administrative and operational tasks of the Fire & Rescue System.

Qualification Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized/technical courses/training in fire and/or emergency medical services or related field equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college supplemented by eight (8) years of experience in fire and/or emergency medical services, including a minimum of four (4) years in a leadership position (Lieutenant or above) in fire and/or emergency medical services; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Comprehensive knowledge of fire, EMS, emergency management and disaster planning management preferred; extensive knowledge of laws and regulations controlling fire, EMS and emergency management; proven management and administrative skills; ability to lead, direct and manage the activities of volunteer and career personnel; ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with volunteers, career personnel, government officials and the public; ability to prepare technical and informative reports and present complex information to varied audiences; and, ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in emergency situations; knowledge of the physical layout of Sussex County preferred; effective written and oral communications skills are required; computer literacy strongly desired.
Special Requirements / Preferred Certifications
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving history; Virginia / National Registry Certified EMT – Basic or higher; NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, 800; EVOC Level 3; possession of or ability to acquire NIMS ICS 300, 400; possession of or ability to acquire Basic and Designated Infection Control Officer; possession of or ability to acquire Virginia EMS Education Coordinator; possession of or ability to acquire VDFP or Pro Board Firefighter I, II, and Hazmat Operations.
Preferred Qualifications: Virginia / National Registry Paramedic; VDFP Instructor I or higher; VDFP Fire Officer II or higher; VA OEMS EMS Officer I; National Fire Academy Incident Safety Officer; National Fire Academy Health and Safety Officer; National Fire Academy Leadership I, II, and III.
Work may be required beyond the normal work schedule, including call-back. On call may be necessary to meet the demands of the department and the needs of the citizens.
Salary Range
$82,500 - 90,000
